Inspired by Robert Wilson’s highly stylised theatre language and Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, this costume design project reimagines Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi as a world of exaggerated shapes, stark silhouettes, and carefully controlled lines. The opera follows the cunning Gianni Schicchi as he manipulates a wealthy family grieving over the death of Buoso Donati, ultimately outwitting them to secure a future for his daughter Lauretta and her lover Rinuccio. Rather than relying on traditional clothing or historical accuracy, the designs focus on sculptural form, proportion, silhouette, and gesture, creating characters that feel almost like figures within a living composition. Drawing subtly from Victorian dress through structured shapes, elongated proportions, and restrained details, the costumes deliberately avoid belonging to any specific period, creating an abstract, timeless world that reflects Wilson’s visual theatre and Beckett’s sense of absurdity, isolation, and theatrical tension.
